Gifts For Pets

My dog and birds, in a rare show of cooperation, presented a demand.  “Give your readers a special occasion shopping list for their pets.  Their pets work hard all year, and they deserve to be pampered at birthdays, holidays, and just because.”  When I hesitated, what followed was ugly.  I’m writing now with a dog growling and three parrots brandishing their beaks in a threatening manner.

Thus, the list.

For Cats

The International Cat Fancier’s Association Show in Burlingame, California featured oodles of booths with mounds of cat-a-nalia. These are a few of the low to moderately priced items available:

MetPet’s teaser, SynRaffia is a toy you use with your cat. To improve muscle tone, to help your cat release stress, and for the two of you to bond. Wave the teaser toy attached to a sturdy, flexible wand and watch your cat watch and bat at the rustling raffia strands.  Metpet.com

A stunning array of cat treats from Pet Extras includes freeze-dried shrimp, cat spice, and calamari.

Pawbreakers, from Pawbreakers are catnip balls. Need we say more? If your cat prefers more natural shapes, Catcouture.com offers tiny catnip mice.

These toys are also available in local cat emporiums.

For Dogs

The Dog Writers’ Association of America’s annual conference, held jointly with the Cat Writers’ of America (don’t ask), included a selection of new or improved dog goodies. I liked:

Hartz Vetpals.  Attractive stuffed animals for supervised play of small dogs. A portion of the sales proceeds go to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation. Each animal is named (the parrot is named Mango) and comes with a story that helps kids and their parents remember important points about their pets’ health. Hartz

Kong toys.  Durable toys to stuff with treats like peanut butter or dog biscuits to occupy your pooch while you make the pumpkin pie. Kong Company

Another gift you might consider—a donation to your local county animal services.  These folks work hard to keep the county people and animals safe.

Happy birthday, holiday, special occasion!
