Bake For Your Cat

Liz Palika writes about pets and keeps pets at home too.  Her cat, Simon, a 12-year-old blue point mixed breed cat, rolled in these treats, played pat-pat with them, and ate them, purring as he munched.

Liz wrote a book called Cat Treat Cookbook .  She shared this recipe from her book.  If your parents say yes, you could make this for your cat.

Cracked Wheat and Catnip Treats

Yield: 50 bite sized treats

14-ounce box Krusteaz Cracked Wheat Bread mix (or comparable)
¼ cup dried catnip
¼ cup tuna fish water from can of water-packed tuna
¾ cup warm water
¼ cup dried catnip for top dressing

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Empty bread mix and its yeast package into a mixing bowl. Add the ¼ cup of dried catnip to the dry ingredients. Mix well.
  3. Add tuna fish water and warm water and mix. The dough will be sticky..
  4. Drop all of the dough onto a lightly greased cookie sheet. Flour or oil your hands so that you can handle the dough and spread it over the bottom of the cookie sheet until it covers the bottom of the cookie sheet or is between ¼ and ½ inch thick..
  5. Sprinkle the remaining ¼ cup of catnip on top of dough..
  6. Bake for 10-15 minutes until the bottom is golden brown. Flip the bread over (don’t worry if it breaks) and bake for 5-10 minutes or until golden brown..
  7. Remove from oven, cool thoroughly. Break into cat bite sized pieces and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator..

If you cook this for your cat, please write to me.  Tell me what you thought.  Did you have fun making these treats? Did your cat enjoy them?  Any suggestions to make the recipe better?
